Insurance > Travel

No surprise. Travel insurance is more expensive the older you get. And, if you have a pre-existing medical condition, take out a loan! It’s not quite that desperate, but travel insurance can be pricey.

First you need to decide whether you want annual multi-trip cover or cover for a one-off trip. If you plan to make several trips a year, multi-trip cover will probably be the cheaper solution.

Either way, you should make sure that the quotes you are comparing offer similar cover, or at least you should be aware of how they differ. For instance, medical cover can vary between £1,000,000 and £15,000,000. (Who needs £15,000,000 cover?)

The maximum length of stay that is covered for any one trip on a multi-trip insurance varies between 15 and 120 days. Needless to say, these variations can make significant differences to quotations.

Our quotes are for annual multi-trip insurance for a couple, both aged 69. Note that all quotes assume no pre-existing medical conditions (see section below for more information).

Important
Quite a few companies do not include Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) in their quotes. Since IPT is currently set at 17.5% for travel insurance, you may well get an unpleasant surprise when you arrive at the end of your transaction unless you have first checked this detail with the insurer.

Pre-existing medical conditions
These make an enormous difference to your quotes and many companies will refuse to insure you at all. So what constitutes a pre-existing condition?

Clearly, you would recognise major heart surgery as falling in this category. But would you also include high blood pressure controlled by medication? Most insurance companies do. All conditions need to be reported and assessed. If you are tempted not to report yours, you may well find that any claim you make is rejected.

Some companies that claim to specialise in insuring for pre-existing conditions will refuse worldwide cover if you want to include North America and the Caribbean. In such cases you may need to consider cover for one-off trips.
